Information Technology|Certification Intelligence | Traffic Secrets

Information technology news and technical information pertaining to certification intelligence for exam education could be the main intent behind this information. Many people do not know the distinction between computer training and certification assessment training. I?d prefer to tell everybody else what the differences are. Computer training is classroom knowledge with scheduled lessons or on the web training concerning the career area related to it. Let me explain! You may want to become Server Administrator. To start with you will need some education somewhere in order to be experienced in the niche and probably acquire a 2 or 4-year degree or get some online training with a professional teacher. You might only want to receive a certificate in this field and have a few classes. This will be viewed computer education.

It certification intelligence on exam training is what you need in order to be fully prepared to move your certification exam. After computer education you might have a diploma or a document but you still do not have a certification that is identified by Microsoft, CIW and CompTia or any other. If you have computer training that qualifies you to become a Server Administrator then you will need to get qualified in Microsoft, CIW or CISCO. Certification exam education specializes in preparing your certification exam to be passed by you. An IT Certification exam is unlike any other exam that you have had in college or school. There are two extremely important things to consider when get yourself ready for a certification examination. They are the proper study strategy and having related material that pertains to the actual examination that?s up to date with the existing market.

You will find merely a handful of places on line that supply Certification test training. The reason I wrote this article is to provide information and information about the best sources on certification exam instruction. There are many students of information technology that want this information because they are seriously interested in passing their accreditation test on the very first try. This short article is not about selling but about helping those people who are not informed about Certification test training.

Another intent behind this article is training concerning it accreditation. There are many universities and on the web training about information technology that may prepare you for a particular subject or area but there are but a few places where you can find information technology certification intelligence on examination training.

Say you desire to become a Technician and you study at a school or receive on line education so that you?re proficient in that field and receive a degree or certificate in that place but until you have a certification examination you still are not licensed. Even after college in order to be qualified in the field you?ll need certainly to schedule an certification test with prometric or pearsonvue that you want.

Where you could possibly get instruction on how to pass your information technology certification examination how many places do you know. Exam training isn?t the same as computer training. You?ll need knowledge of how to study for your certification exam and since an IT exam is not the same as the exams in school to understand the proper study practices. Because if you are studying material that?s aged then you?ll not go your certification exam you?ll also have to know where to obtain current material about your certification exam. Certification exam training is essential if you intend on so you can avoid 2nd and 3rd exam fees passing your certification exam the first time.

Some individuals might already be working on the task in the job that they desire, such as for instance a Server Administrator, Desktop Support Technician or even a PC Repair Technician. They might have had prior teaching before employment but have never obtained a certification. They probably know their work and are extremely proficient in their work and industry but require a certification because it is required by their employer. They cannot need any computer training. So they can pass their certification exam certification exam training is only needed by them. I am hoping you get the picture now. Looking for a good resource then visit: billnaugle.com

Eating asparagus may prevent a hangover, study suggests

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Drinking to ring in the New Year may leave many suffering with the dreaded hangover. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the amino acids and minerals found in asparagus extract may alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells against toxins.

Researchers at the Institute of Medical Science and Jeju National University in Korea analyzed the components of young asparagus shoots and leaves to compare their biochemical effects on human and rat liver cells. "The amino acid and mineral contents were found to be much higher in the leaves than the shoots," says lead researcher B.Y. Kim.

Chronic alcohol use causes oxidative stress on the liver as well as unpleasant physical effects associated with a hangover. "Cellular toxicities were significantly alleviated in response to treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots," says Kim. "These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells."

Asparagus officinalis is a common vegetable that is widely consumed worldwide and has long been used as an herbal medicine due to its anticancer effects. It also has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.

What Matters in a Hearing Test?

For those who are experiencing some type of loss, a hearing test is one of the most important first steps to take. It will provide doctors with an understanding of what is happening with your ability to hear and why it is occurring. It is a good idea to factor in the concerns related to your ability to hear such as things like your exposure to loud sounds. You also want to discuss symptoms with your doctor that could be a clue about what is causing your problem. But, why does it matter? Why should you care about this type of loss?

It Is Not Always Preventable?

One of the misconceptions about loss is that it is something that can be prevented. That is rarely the case. In most situations, a hearing test will pinpoint damage to the inner ear that stems from exposure to loud sounds such as those occurring at work or during recreational activities. Yet many people have no idea why they are struggling with this. They may not have such exposure. Just getting older can cause loss. In other people, hereditary factors can play a role especially if you are losing your ability to hear at a young age. There?s not always a way to prevent it.

There Is Treatment Available

There is no cure for this type of loss. Most people who have damage to the inner ear will not overcome that loss, though it may improve significantly in some situations. In many situations, though, the use of a device that is placed inside the ear canal or on the outside of the ear can give you back some of your loss of the ability to hear. You will be able to do the things you used to do without having to worry about being unable to hear well.

Preventing Further Damage

In some situations, having a hearing test is important so that you know what is happening and why it is occurring. It may be possible to slow the progression of loss by using measures to prevent further damage to the inner ear. The use of protective devices over your ears, for example, can help to minimize your risks and give you some reassurance that your condition is not worsening.

A hearing test is not something to put off even if you just do not want to do it. It can provide answers to your questions, guide your decisions moving forward and help you to get treatment for your situation. This type of screening can also help you to know that your ears are completely healthy and not at risk. Don?t assume you know what is happening with your ears until your talk to your doctor about it.

Getting a regular new mexico hearing test can greatly improve your quality of life. Visit the wonderful staff at http://www.miracle-ear-newmexico.com and schedule yours today.

FDA Backs Safety of Transgenic Fish

Transgenic AquAdvantage salmon grow twice as fast as wild Atlantic salmon. Image: Barrett & McKay Photography / AquaBounty

The first genetically engineered (GE) animal for human consumption?a fast-growing salmon?has come a step closer to the dinner table, with a piece of paperwork posted online on December 22 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA?s draft environmental assessment concludes that the fish poses no foreseeable risk to nature. After 60 days of public comment, the FDA may issue a final assessment and approval?at which time AquaBounty, of Maynard, Mass., can begin selling the fish.

However, the draft assessment was dated 4 May, suggesting that the FDA had kept its conclusions under wraps for several months. Advocates on both sides of the issue speculate that political interference may be responsible. ?I think it was controversial, and it was an election year,? says Patty Lovera, assistant director of Food and Water Watch, a Washington, D.C., group opposed to GE food animals. An FDA spokeswoman, Morgan Liscinsky, declined to comment on accusations that the process had been politicized, and says it?s possible that the agency could request further studies after the public comment period.

Delays would not shock AquaBounty's CEO, Ron Stotish, whose company has been seeking FDA approval for the fish since 1995. When he was alerted to the decision today, he didn?t initially believe it. ?I said, ?I?ll wait until I see it because I?ve received calls like this before and it never happened,?? he says. The FDA has reviewed more than 50 safety studies, including one that shows the engineered salmon poses no more of an allergic potential than a wild salmon. The engineered Atlantic salmon contains an active growth-hormone gene from a Chinook salmon that allows it to reach market weight in 18 months rather than three years.

Anti-GE groups still have a long list of concerns. Lovera would like to see more studies done on the potential health risks of the salmon, published in peer-reviewed journals and conducted by scientists with no affiliation to AquaBounty. However, it?s not clear where the money to conduct such tests would come from, as?federal research funding rarely supports GE animals.

The GE salmon are currently kept within enclosed, inland tanks to prevent the small risk that the nearly sterile females will breed with wild salmon. But Lovera still worries that once the fish are approved, manufacturers will file for permits to keep them within nets in the open ocean in order to lower costs. ?This is basically the final step and we think the FDA has given a strong signal that they will accept the fish, and that is a mistake,? she says.

Stotish counters that as part of their application, AquaBounty has promised to not sell the fish to farmers who do not have enclosed, inland tanks. After 17 years and $60 million spent trying to win FDA approval, Stotish is still cautious. ?We are not so foolish to think that this process will suddenly be normal for us,? he says.

Four planets in 'habitable zones' spotted within spitting distance of Earth

Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / December 19, 2012

This diagram shows an artist's rendering comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The 'habitable zone' is a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.

Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.

The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.

The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.

Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.

Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.

The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.

Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.

The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?

A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

Solid Tips Anyone Can Use For Personal Finance Management ...

If you live alone, your money management techniques usually don?t affect others. However, if you have a family, it is important to remember that you are responsible for their financial well-being as well. Read this guide for great tips on how to manage your personal finances in a way that will yield you benefits.

If you are looking to improve your credit report, it is a good idea to have between two to four active credit cards. Using one card can take a while to improve your credit, while using over four cards can represent a lack of being able to manage finances effectively. Start out slow with just two cards and gradually build your way up, if needed.

TIP! Although you may need to exert more effort, trying only using ATMs that your bank approves. Transaction fees that banks may charge for using ATM machines that are not affiliated with them can quickly amount to be a large sum.

The easiest way to grow your own wealth is to live below your means. Individuals that spend all their money will have a hard time in accumulating wealth. This is because they spend the money when they initially get it. Simple, spend less than you earn!

Have a little envelope with you at all times. Keep all your business cards and receipts securely stored in this envelope. It?s important to keep these things for future reference. Your receipts can be used to compare statements in the event you are charged twice for a transaction.

Put your tax refunds towards any debt you have. A lot of people buy unimportant things with their refund, instead of working on the amounts they already owe. Doing this will keep a person in debt forever.

Be wary of making investment choices based off of past performances alone. Do not stick with investments that aren?t yielding you money.

Having your home taken from you is an extremely difficult situation to live through. However, sometimes it is necessary if you want a better financial situation. You might be able to better afford paying rent at a different location. The worst thing that could happen is getting evicted because your can?t make your home repayments. You might want to act before you have issues.

You must have a good method for getting rid of financial documents safely to protect your personal finances. One of the best ways to deal with it is to buy a shredder. If you fail to shred your financial documents, you put yourself at risk of suffering identity theft. The best way to protect yourself is by being thorough.

TIP! To improve your personal finances, stop paying the retail price on your purchases. It is not prudent to restrict your purchases to certain brands unless those brands are truly better.

Watch your mail for letters notifying you that the terms of your credit accounts are changing. By law, you should receive at minimum a forty-five day notice. Read the new terms of agreement and changes the company is going to make. This will help you decide if you wish to continue being their customer. If you do not want to keep the account, pay what you owe and close it.

Knowing what possessions a person has, and their real value, can prevent those items from being sold unknowingly at a garage sale for 25 cents, or making their way to the Goodwill. An individual?s personal finances will improve greatly if they properly sell a rare piece of furniture, as opposed to just throwing it away.

If you?re in a foreign country, eat where the locals eat. The restaurants in hotels and tourist areas have ?tourist trap pricing,? which can be substantially higher than what locals pay. With this in mind, eat where the locals eat! This way, you will not be wasting money on delicacies and can enjoy the local cuisine.

To save money on your bedding, visit the bargain store when you need to get bedsheets or other bedding materials. The materials at these stores are of the same quality as more expensive materials, but you can save money on them, and it can save you time to go to one store rather than going to different specialty shops for each piece. Researching your purchases may help better your finances.

Never spend too much on food you will not eat; even if it is on sale. You can save money by stocking up on things you know you use regularly and those you will eat before they go bad. Be sensible and only buy a bargain if it is one that you can use.

TIP! Financial mistakes can teach you a lot. If you are trying to fix your credit and have spent considerable time doing so, let that be a beacon for you not to get in that kind of mess again.

Do not invest any money on something that assures you of more money overnight. Internet marketers tend to fall for these schemes. This isn?t to say that there?s no value in taking training courses. However, remember that your goal is to make money. If you?re spending so much on study materials that you don?t make a profit, you?re wasting your money.

You should utilize flexible spending accounts if they are offered by your employer. A flexible account will save you money if you use to pay medical bills among other things. Flexible spending accounts are pretax monies put aside for medical and daycare expenses. There are limits to the amount allowed to be placed in a flex spending account, so you should consult a tax professional.

Using single dollars received as change from cash transactions for the purpose of buying lottery tickets can be an enjoyable way to potentially acquire a great deal of money. If one uses the left over dollar bills for scratch-off lottery tickets, they stand a chance to win much more than they spent.

TIP! Try cutting out the cell phone to save money. While that might be difficult for you to consider, it was not that long ago that cell phones were not even available.

For small purchases, you should have 10 dollars on a debit card, or in cash, readily available. Many stores now use one of these credit ?laws? to their advantage, which requires that anyone using a credit card make a minimum purchase. It can be an understandable policy at times, but it clearly needs more definition.

As mentioned earlier, those who are responsible for others must plan their personal financial life with a heightened level of diligence. Rather than allowing yourself to spend money on things that are unnecessary and getting in debt, try to create a budget that could help you maximize the things spent from your income.

Have 2 different savings accounts; one that you can dip into on a rainy day, and one that is strictly for emergencies. In addition to saving for unforeseen occurrences, you can also save for anticipated events, such as going to college, buying a new car, or paying off the balance on a credit card.

'Homeland' may be hard to buy, but hang in there

Kent Smith / Showtime

Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison and Damian Lewis as Nick Brody on "Homeland."

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

OPINION: When a television show amasses a loyal, cult-like following straight out of the gate, the bar for every episode of each season is set incredibly high. This has certainly been the case with Showtime's ?Homeland.?

During the first season, the day-after watercoolering of the show largely involved phrases such as, ?Could you believe that?!? The plight of the show?s protagonist, Claire Danes? rogue CIA agent Carrie, was sympathetic and surprising. The "is he or isn?t he a terrorist?" talk surrounding Damian Lewis? war hero Sgt. Brody had viewers simultaneously guessing about and weirdly rooting for the guy. President Barack Obama even went on record as saying the show was among his must-sees.

The refrain during this sophomore season, however, has been more along the lines of ?I just can?t believe that.?

Warning: If you aren?t caught up on ?Homeland,? there are spoilers ahead. Hear that? BIG SPOILERS. READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Take these plotlines from season two, for example:

  • A dozen terrorists storm and shoot up a tailor shop on a sleepy street in Gettysburg, Pa., and no one seems to notice? Not buying it.
  • Brody's daughter Dana and the vice president's son Finn shake off the Secret Service, run over and kill a woman on a D.C. street, and again, no one seems to notice? COME ON.
  • The world?s most dangerous terrorist has his life saved via text message. Really? (Almost as difficult to believe is Brody?s incredible cell phone service.)

Those are just some of the things that have drawn the ire of loyal ?Homeland? viewers. For a vocal percentage of fans, the antics among the agents and double agents have become just too much to bear. ?Homeland? has jumped the shark, they say. ?Will it find its proper course again?? they ask.

And to those fans, I say: You can?t be serious. You can?t really be mad at or give up on a show because as it moves forward, you?re increasingly required to suspend disbelief.?

The suspension of disbelief is what makes television fun. If that weren?t the case, Ken Burns' documentaries would make up the majority of the prime-time network lineup. And with all due respect to Burns and some truly wonderful filmmaking, it?s a statement of fact that most great television shows require significant suspensions of disbelief.

Take, for example, the numerous police procedurals as well as hospital and court dramas that require viewers to forget about reality for an hour. How many bizarre incidents (shooters, bombs in patients, plane crashes, sex with ghosts, to name a few) are going to befall the doctors and patients on "Grey's Anatomy"? (And before that, "ER.") Serial killer "Dexter" may be a smart guy, but the stunts he's been pulling the last few seasons would've led to his capture ages ago (and may finally on Sunday's season finale).?

And to take things farther, consider the more fantastical programs. Did we really buy the idea that all those people in ?Lost? were on a mysterious island where nothing made sense? And what about ?The Walking Dead?? Folks: It?s a show about zombies. And that brings me to ?Grimm.? It?s entirely implausible that wesen (part humans who can transform into fairy-tale creatures) live among us, but the show manages to be totally fun and engrossing anyway. ?

Ultimately, all of these shows are successful because the path between sharp left turns toward unbelievability is paved with great acting and real moments that raise common questions about human nature. Can you trust that people are who they say they are? Are things really how they seem? Will good win out in the end?

These themes are present in nearly every scene of ?Homeland.??Getting the answers to the questions that arise from them is what moves the viewer from one place to the next, and sometimes an implausible twist is just part of the deal. That?s how television works.

So ?Homeland? fans, I implore you: Stick it out. Go into the finale with a little trust that things will resolve in a way that?s true to the show. In this case, that doesn?t have to be perfectly believable, just believable enough. Because when there?s great acting, great writing and nearly flawless execution, there?s some wiggle room where plausibility is concerned. Just have a little faith.

The ?Homeland? season finale airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on Showtime.

What's bugged you most about "Homeland" this season? What have you loved? Tell us on our Facebook page!

All Hail Cabs In NYC! (Soon From Smartphones)

1zq82eoStarting February 15th, New Yorkers will be able to hail cabs via smartphones?in Manhattan. The contentious one-year pilot program is being hailed as a win for transportation innovation, smartphone rideshare apps like Uber, and people who dislike holding their arms at a 45-degree angle. Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman David Yassky?called e-hailing apps “inevitable.” The pilot will test the waters for cabs within 1.5 miles of?passengers in norther Manhattan and the outer boros?and half-a-mile in most of Manhattan, according to transportationnation.org. Despite some early trepidation from five of the commissioners, the program was approved unanimously, 7-0, with two abstaining. Additionally, apps must comply with the current payment systems administered by Verifone and Creative Mobile Technologies (CMT), which, for the moment, could exclude popular smartphone payment system Square. “Look, if we?re gonna bring e-hailing apps to New York, we?re gonna do it right, and we don?t want a kind of half measure that won?t provide real service to customers,” Chairman Yassky told Betabeat about the upcoming limited pilot. Uber is declaring the ruling a victory for its smartphone app for taxis, UberTaxi, which had been shut down over alleged legal difficulties. But it’s unclear how Uber will be able to adjust to the metering requirement. We will update readers as the story develops.

Google Maps return to iPhone with new mobile app

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google Maps have found their way back to the iPhone.

The world's most popular online mapping system returned late Wednesday with the release of the Google Maps' iPhone app. The release comes nearly three months after Apple Inc. replaced Google Maps as the device's built-in navigation system and inserted its own maps into the latest version of its mobile operating system.

Apple's maps proved to be far inferior to Google's. The product's shoddiness prompted Apple CEO Tim Cook to issue a rare public apology and recommend that iPhone owners consider using Google maps through a mobile Web browser or seek other alternatives until his company could fix the problems. Cook also replaced the executive in charge of Apple's mobile operating system after the company's maps became a subject of widespread ridicule.

Among other things, Apple's maps misplaced landmarks, overlooked towns and sometimes got people horribly lost. In a particularly egregious example flagged this week, Australian police derided Apple's maps as "life-threatening" because the system was steering people looking for the city of Mildura into a sweltering, remote desert 44 miles from the desired destination.

Google Inc., in contrast, is hailing its new iPhone app as a major improvement from the one evicted by Apple.

"We started from scratch," said Daniel Graf, mobile director of Google Maps. Google engineers started working on the new app before Apple's Sept. 19 ouster, Graf said, though he declined to be more specific.

The additional tools in the free iPhone mapping app include turn-by-turn directions. Google's previous refusal to include that popular feature on the iPhone app while making it available for smartphones running on its own Android software is believed to be one of the reasons Apple decided to develop its own technology. The friction that has developed between Google and Apple as they jostle for leadership in the increasingly important smartphone market also played a role in the mapping switch.

Google's new iPhone mapping app also will offer its street-level photography of local neighborhoods for the first time on Apple's mobile operating system, as well as three-dimensional views, public transit directions and listings for more than 80 million businesses. The iPhone app still lacks some of the mapping features available on Android-powered phones, such as directions in malls and other buildings.

There still isn't a Google mapping app for Apple's top-selling tablet computer, the iPad, but the company plans to make one eventually. Google, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., declined to say when it hopes to release an iPad mapping app. For now, iPad owners can use the maps in an iPhone mode. That won't be the best experience, but it still may be better than Apple's maps on the iPad.

Google's free mapping solution is likely to become one of the hottest commodities in Apple's app store, if for no other reason because of pent-up demand among iPhone owners fed up with Apple's alternative. Some iPhone owners even refused to upgrade to Apple's newest software, iOS 6, because they didn't want to lose access to the old Google mapping application built into iOS 5 and earlier versions.

Apple didn't respond to a request for comment about Google's new apps late Wednesday, but it approved the technology before its release.

Graf said Google isn't hoping to make Apple look bad with its new mapping app. "On maps, we have a friendly relationship," he said.

'Liquid that thinks:' Swarm of ping-pong-ball-sized robots created

Dec. 14, 2012 ? University of Colorado Boulder Assistant Professor Nikolaus Correll likes to think in multiples. If one robot can accomplish a singular task, think how much more could be accomplished if you had hundreds of them.

Correll and his computer science research team, including research associate Dustin Reishus and professional research assistant Nick Farrow, have developed a basic robotic building block, which he hopes to reproduce in large quantities to develop increasingly complex systems.

Recently the team created a swarm of 20 robots, each the size of a Ping Pong ball, which they call "droplets." When the droplets swarm together, Correll said, they form a "liquid that thinks."

To accelerate the pace of innovation, he has created a lab where students can explore and develop new applications of robotics with basic, inexpensive tools.

Similar to the fictional "nanomorphs" depicted in the "Terminator" films, large swarms of intelligent robotic devices could be used for a range of tasks. Swarms of robots could be unleashed to contain an oil spill or to self-assemble into a piece of hardware after being launched separately into space, Correll said.

Correll plans to use the droplets to demonstrate self-assembly and swarm-intelligent behaviors such as pattern recognition, sensor-based motion and adaptive shape change. These behaviors could then be transferred to large swarms for water- or air-based tasks.

Correll hopes to create a design methodology for aggregating the droplets into more complex behaviors such as assembling parts of a large space telescope or an aircraft.

In the fall, Correll received the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development award known as "CAREER." In addition, he has received support from NSF's Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research program, as well as NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

He also is continuing work on robotic garden technology he developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009. Correll has been working with Joseph Tanner in CU-Boulder's aerospace engineering sciences department to further develop the technology, involving autonomous sensors and robots that can tend gardens, in conjunction with a model of a long-term space habitat being built by students.

Correll says there is virtually no limit to what might be created through distributed intelligence systems.

"Every living organism is made from a swarm of collaborating cells," he said. "Perhaps some day, our swarms will colonize space where they will assemble habitats and lush gardens for future space explorers."

US economy could withstand brief fall off 'cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's the scenario that's been spooking employers and investors and slowing the U.S. economy:

Congress and the White House fail to strike a budget deal by New Year's Day. Their stalemate triggers sharp tax increases and spending cuts. Those measures shrink consumer spending, stifle job growth, topple stock prices and push the economy off a "fiscal cliff" and into recession.

The reality may be a lot less bleak.

Even if New Year's passed with no deal, few businesses or consumers would likely panic as long as an agreement seemed likely soon. The tax increases and spending cuts could be retroactively repealed after Jan. 1.

And the impact of the tax increases would be felt only gradually. Most people would receive slightly less money in each paycheck.

"The simple conclusion that going off the cliff necessarily means a recession next year is wrong," says Lewis Alexander, an economist at Nomura Securities. "It will ultimately depend on how long the policies are in place."

It's always possible that negotiations between President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders will collapse in acrimony. The prospect of permanent tax increases and spending cuts could cause many consumers and businesses to delay spending, hiring or expanding.

But most economists expect a deal, if not by New Year's then soon after. Businesses and consumers will likely remain calm as long as negotiators seem to be moving toward an agreement.

"The atmosphere is more important than whether the talks spill" into next year, said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

Here's why many are optimistic that a brief fall over the cliff wouldn't derail the economic recovery:

? Though the fiscal cliff would cost the economy an estimated $671 billion for all of 2013, the tax hit for most people would be slight at first. The expiration of Social Security and income tax cuts would be spread throughout 2013. For taxpayers with incomes of $40,000 to $65,000, paychecks would shrink an average of about $1,500 next year but an average of just $130 in January, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

? About a third of the tax increases wouldn't touch most Americans. Some would hit businesses. Others, such as higher taxes on investment income and estates, and the expiration of middle-income tax credits, wouldn't come due until Americans filed their 2013 taxes in 2014.

? If a deal seemed imminent, some experts say the Internal Revenue Service could delay the increased tax withholding that's due to kick in. Without a deal, the top income tax rate for single people with taxable income between about $36,000 and $88,000 would rise from 25 percent to 28 percent. A delay in the increased withholding would ease the initial tax hit.

? About $85 billion in spending cuts to defense and domestic programs would take weeks or longer to take effect. That means government agencies wouldn't cut jobs right away.

Still, if budget talks dragged on, many businesses might put off investment or hiring. That's why most economists say it would be crucial to reach a deal within roughly the first two months of 2013.

Already, uncertainty is causing some businesses to delay spending. Consider Apex Tool and Manufacturing, a 10-person shop in Evansville, Indiana, that makes parts for the automotive glass, telecom equipment and plastics industries.

Sales have picked up. Company President Terry Babb says he'd like to spend about $150,000 to buy a computer-controlled milling machine. A couple of years ago, Apex earned too little for Babb to even worry about taxes.

Yet he's reluctant to absorb new costs until he's sure what tax changes are coming. A tax break for companies that invest in new equipment is set to expire. Companies can't claim that break unless new equipment is on site before year's end. Machinery can take weeks to arrive, meaning it's too late for Babb to claim the credit this year.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Wednesday that the uncertainties about taxes are holding back the economy by causing businesses to postpone investment and hiring.

"Clearly, the fiscal cliff is having effects on the economy," Bernanke said.

Many more people would be affected if something called the alternative minimum tax isn't fixed.

The financially painful AMT was designed to prevent rich people from exploiting loopholes and deductions to avoid any income tax. But the AMT wasn't indexed for inflation, so it's increasingly threatened middle-income taxpayers. Congress has acted each year for a decade to prevent the AMT from hitting many more people.

If it isn't fixed again, roughly 33 million taxpayers, including married couples with income as low as $45,000 ? down from $74,450 in 2011? could face the AMT. Previously, only 5 million taxpayers had to pay it. Taxpayers subject to the AMT must calculate their tax under both the regular system and the AMT and pay the larger amount.

The IRS has said it assumes Congress and the White House will fix the AMT in a deal to avoid the cliff. If they don't, the IRS will need weeks to reprogram computers and make other adjustments. In the meantime, nearly 60 million taxpayers couldn't file tax returns early next year because they couldn't determine whether they owe the AMT. Refunds would be delayed.

One immediate spending cut would be the end of extended unemployment benefits. Most states provide benefits for 26 weeks. But since 2008, the federal government has provided an emergency benefits program. This adds an average of 32 weeks, depending on the state, for a total of 58 weeks of benefits for the long-term unemployed.

If the extended benefits end Jan. 1 as scheduled, about $30 billion would be saved next year. But without that money, about 2 million people who have been out of work for more than six months would lose benefits averaging about $320 a week.

Economists note that recipients of unemployment aid tend to spend that money quickly, giving a lift to the economy. The expiration of the extended benefits would cut economic growth by about 0.2 percentage point next year, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

The gravest scenario would be if the budget talks collapsed, negotiators went home and the tax increases and spending cuts appeared to be permanent.

In that case, Macroeconomic Advisors, a forecasting firm, warns that the Dow Jones industrial average could plunge up to 2,000 points within days. Businesses would turn gloomier in anticipation of Americans paying higher taxes. Retailers would order fewer cars, appliances and clothing. Consumers' confidence would likely plummet, followed by their spending.

The economy would shrink at an annual rate of 0.6 percent in the first three months of 2013, estimates Joel Prakken, an economist at Macroeconomic Advisors. That compares with an estimated 1.9 percent growth rate if a deal is reached.

CBO forecasts that the economy would decline 0.5 percent in the first half of 2013 and fall into recession. The unemployment rate would rise to 9.1 percent from the current 7.7 percent.

Most economists are counting on fear of such a disaster to prod Congress and the White House to make a deal. But analysts expect the Social Security tax cut and extended unemployment benefits to end. Those two changes would lower growth by 0.7 percentage point next year, the CBO estimates.

Under that scenario, Social Security taxes would revert back to 6.2 percent on the first $110,000 of income, up from 4.2 percent. The increase would cost someone earning $50,000 an extra $1,000 a year, or nearly $20 a week.

Some consumers have been getting nervous. Mike Duke, CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said Tuesday that in a poll last month of the store's shoppers, an overwhelming majority were aware of the threat of high taxes from the cliff. And some said it would lead them to cut back their holiday buying, Duke said. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is considered an economic bellwether.

Consumer confidence fell sharply this month, according to a survey by the University of Michigan, partly because of worries that taxes will rise next year.

For all their combative rhetoric, the White House and House Republicans have identified areas that could underpin a budget deal. Both sides concede, for example, that higher tax revenue and lower spending on programs like Medicare, the government health insurance program for the elderly, will be included.

Whatever the outcome, some trends could offset part of the economic damage. Ashworth notes, for instance, that the average retail price for gasoline has dropped 15 percent this fall. Lower gas prices give consumers more money to spend elsewhere.

And if the crisis is resolved, as many expect, the boost to business and consumer confidence would encourage more hiring and spending.

On Tuesday, the Business Roundtable, a group of large company CEOs, urged Congress and the White House to avoid the cliff by striking a budget deal containing about $4 billion in tax increases and spending cuts.

"We could end up with a much more robust recovery than anybody's envisioned" if a deal is reached, said David Cote, CEO of Honeywell International.

Bernanke: Fiscal cliff already hurting economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy is already being hurt by the "fiscal cliff" standoff in Washington, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Wednesday. But Bernanke said the Fed believes the crisis will be resolved without significant long-term damage.

The steep tax increases and spending cuts can be avoided with a successful budget deal, Bernanke said during a news conference after the Fed's final meeting of the year. The Fed's latest forecasts for stronger economic growth next year and slightly lower unemployment assume that happens.

Still, Bernanke said the uncertainty surrounding the resolution is already affecting consumer and business confidence. And it has led businesses to cut back on investment.

"Clearly the fiscal cliff is having effects on the economy," Bernanke said.

Bernanke said the most helpful thing that Congress and the Obama administration can do is resolve the issue quickly.

"I'm hoping that Congress will do the right thing on the fiscal cliff," Bernanke said. "There is a problem with kicking the can down the road."

Bernanke repeated his belief that if the scheduled tax hikes and spending cuts do take effect in January, they will have a significantly adverse effect on the economy, regardless of what the Fed might do.

"We cannot offset the full impact of the fiscal cliff. It's just too big," Bernanke said.

Still, the Fed took more steps Wednesday to try and help boost economic growth and lower unemployment.

After the meeting, the Fed said it would keep its key short-term interest rate near zero as long as unemployment remains above 6.5 percent and inflation stays tame. It was the first time the Fed had linked future rate increases to specific economic markers.

And in an effort to drive unemployment lower, the Fed said it will spend a total of $85 billion a month to sustain an aggressive drive to keep long-term interest rates low.

Keeping rates low encourages more borrowing and spending, which drives economic growth.

At the news conference, Bernanke said changes in the purchases will be determined by how the economy performs.

He said the Fed expects to keep purchasing bonds to support economic growth "until we see substantial improvement in the labor market."

But if the committee determines that the risks of increasing the Fed's balance sheet begin to outweigh the benefits, the purchase program will be modified, he said.

Cassini spots mini Nile River on Saturn's moon Titan

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Scientists with NASA's Cassini mission have spotted what appears to be a miniature, extraterrestrial likeness of Earth's Nile River: a river valley on Saturn's moon Titan that stretches more than 200 miles (400 kilometers) from its "headwaters" to a large sea. It is the first time images have revealed a river system this vast and in such high resolution anywhere other than Earth.

Scientists deduce that the river, which is in Titan's north polar region, is filled with liquid hydrocarbons because it appears dark along its entire length in the high-resolution radar image, indicating a smooth surface.

"Though there are some short, local meanders, the relative straightness of the river valley suggests it follows the trace of at least one fault, similar to other large rivers running into the southern margin of this same Titan sea," said Jani Radebaugh, a Cassini radar team associate at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. "Such faults -- fractures in Titan's bedrock -- may not imply plate tectonics, like on Earth, but still lead to the opening of basins and perhaps to the formation of the giant seas themselves."

The new image is available online at: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/pia16197.html .

Titan is the only other world we know of that has stable liquid on its surface. While Earth's hydrologic cycle relies on water, Titan's equivalent cycle involves hydrocarbons such as ethane and methane. In Titan's equatorial regions, images from Cassini's visible-light cameras in late 2010 revealed regions that darkened due to recent rainfall. Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer confirmed liquid ethane at a lake in Titan's southern hemisphere known as Ontario Lacus in 2008.

"Titan is the only place we've found besides Earth that has a liquid in continuous movement on its surface," said Steve Wall, the radar deputy team lead, based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "This picture gives us a snapshot of a world in motion. Rain falls, and rivers move that rain to lakes and seas, where evaporation starts the cycle all over again. On Earth, the liquid is water; on Titan, it's methane; but on both it affects most everything that happens."

The radar image here was taken on Sept. 26, 2012. It shows Titan's north polar region, where the river valley flows into Kraken Mare, a sea that is, in terms of size, between the Caspian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea on Earth. The real Nile River stretches about 4,100 miles (6,700 kilometers). The processes that led to the formation of Earth's Nile are complex, but involve faulting in some regions.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and ASI, the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The radar instrument was built by JPL and the Italian Space Agency, working with team members from the US and several European countries. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Stocks gain on budget talk optimism, Fed stimulus

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market sprang back to life Tuesday, putting the Dow Jones industrial average on track for its biggest gain this month, following hopeful signs of progress in budget talks being held in Washington.

The Dow jumped 107 points to 13,277 as of 1:29 p.m. in New York. The Dow posted modest increases over the previous four days. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up 13 points at 1,431. The Nasdaq composite was up 41 points at 3,028.

Delta Air Lines rose 76 cents to $10.90 after the company said it will buy almost half of Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic for $360 million as it seeks a bigger share of the lucrative New York-to-London travel market.

AIG gained $1.64 cents to $35 after the U.S. Treasury Department said it has sold the rest of its stake in the insurer. AIG was bailed out by the government after nearly collapsing during the 2008 financial crisis.

Stocks have edged up since the start of the month as investors watch for developments in the budget talks. Tax increases and federal spending cuts are scheduled to start Jan. 1 unless a deal is reached to reduce the U.S. budget deficit. Economists say the measures, if implemented, could eventually push the economy back into recession.

The S&P 500 fell as much as 5 percent after the U.S. presidential election Nov. 6 as investors worried that gridlock in Washington would prevent a budget deal. With Tuesday's advance, the S&P 500 has recouped all of the ground it lost since the election.

The Wall Street Journal reported that budget negotiations between the White House and Republican House Speaker John Boehner had "progressed steadily" in recent days. That reinvigorated talks that appeared to have stalled, the paper reported, citing people close to the process.

Stock markets stayed higher even after Boehner said midday Tuesday that President Barack Obama is slow-walking talks to avoid the fiscal cliff, and hasn't outlined spending cuts he's willing to support as part of a compromise.

"The market has been very susceptible to 'fiscal cliff' headlines," said Todd Salamone, a senior vice president at Schaeffers Investment Research, adding that stocks have rallied more on good news, than they have fallen on indications that talks were stalling. "It seems the expectation is that something will get done, but it's a very cautious expectation. There's a lot of money on the sidelines."

Trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange was below average.

Stocks are holding on to their gains for the year. The Dow Jones is up 8.7 percent since the start of the year, while the S&P 500 has gained 13.8 percent.

The Federal Reserve is expected this week to announce a new bond-buying plan to support the U.S. economy with the goal of further reducing long-term interest rates and encouraging borrowing by companies and individuals. Once its two-day policy meeting ends Wednesday, the Fed is likely to say it will start buying more long-term Treasurys to replace a program that expires at year's end.

"I would be a huge shock to the system if it wasn't continued," said Dave Abate, a senior wealth advisor with Strategic Wealth Partners in Seven Hills, Ohio. "The markets across the boards are pricing in a continuation of the stimulus."

Investors were also encouraged by a report that showed an index of German investor optimism rose more than expected in December, suggesting market professionals think Europe's largest economy will avoid an outright recession.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose 3 basis points to 1.65 percent.

Other stocks making big moves:

?Urban Outfitters shares rose $1.81 to $38.82 after the company reported rising sales. The retailer, which operates Anthropologie, Free People and its namesake stores, reported its third-quarter results in November, which fell just short of market expectations.

?Dollar General fell $3.04 to $43.53 after the company said that while its sales over the Thanksgiving weekend and the start of the holiday shopping season were encouraging, it remains cautious about the rest of the year, noting that consumer spending remains tight.

? TripAdvisor soared $3 to $41.37 Liberty Interactive agreed to increase its stake in the travel website by buying a block of shares from media mogul Barry Diller and The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation. Liberty will gain control of the company.
