Squaremouth Answers Question about Travel Insurance for an ...

From Lonely Planet?s Travel Forum (the full discussion can be found here):

I am starting my 6 month round the world trip (US,?Central America,?Cuba,?Europe, trans siberian train) and would like to buy travel insurance. As my residency is in?Hong Kong?and I start the journey from?Australia, I am?having trouble finding a travel insurance policy that suits me ? I don?t have residency in Australia, so couldn?t find one from an Australian company, and for Hong Kong travel insurance, I am required to depart from Hong Kong? or it wouldn?t cover me if Cuba is part of my trip?

Could someone please help me as I am leaving on 20th Oct, ?and I really hope to get the travel insurance before departure.

Squaremouth?s Response:

There are travel insurance policies that will provide international medical coverage based on your residency situation. The effective date is usually the date of departure, so you could just select your departure from Hong Kong as your date of departure. However, if you would rather to postpone coverage until you arrive in Australia, an international medical policy will also allow this, without your residency being an issue.

Trawick International?s ?Safe Travels International? policy is a low-cost option that will provide $50,000 in emergency medical, unlimited evacuation and repatriation, and $7500 in return air trip interruption coverage. This plan also includes life insurance, non-medical evacuation, and baggage & personal items loss benefits. As long as you are not looking for a policy that includes cancellation coverage, this might be a good option for you.

3Qs: The social impact of social networks | news @ Northeastern

How do you predict social networks and digital communications will continue to shape our society?

A few things come to mind. Although I do not believe that dig?ital media are fun?da?men?tally changing our social prac?tices, one thing that is changing is the extent to which our social prac?tices are recorded. In the past, most of our social inter?ac?tions were pri?vate and undoc?u?mented. That is increas?ingly not the case. When we interact with others through the Internet, we leave dig?ital records behind. Com?pa?nies like Face?book and Twitter have huge data?bases full of all kinds of infor?ma?tion about our social behav?iors. We are just starting to har?ness the power of that infor?ma?tion, using online social net?work data to, for example, pre?dict voting behavior and the spread of infec?tious dis?eases. I think we will see a lot more of that in the future ? using data about your social net?works and behav?iors to cus?tomize all kinds of expe?ri?ences, from tar?geted mar?keting and adver?tising, to per?son?al?ized web browsing, to health?care informed by your social?history.

I also hope that the rise of social media will help to remedy some long-??standing gender and racial inequal?i?ties in the com?puting and infor?ma?tion tech?nology pro?fes?sions. Women and minori?ties have long been under?rep?re?sented in these fields, but as social media grow, so too does demand for people who are trained in fields such as com?pu?ta?tional social sci?ence, dig?ital human?i?ties and health infor?matics. These areas draw from fields that have his?tor?i?cally attracted women and minori?ties and I hope the move towards social com?puting will make IT more inclu?sive in the future. Women and minori?ties have a lot to con?tribute, and having a pop?u?la?tion of tech?nology pro?ducers that is more reflec?tive of the pop?u?la?tion of tech?nology users would be great for everyone.

A Personal Trainer Is Much More Than A Coach

For centuries, people have been consulting oracles for information and direction in the subjects that excite their passions. Personal trainers, in a way, are oracles of fitness. Not only are they willing to take on a clientele that ranges from fit to...not so fit, they have been trained themselves in the art of conditioning the human body. Many people seeking information about becoming healthier are reluctant to hire a personal trainer because it brings back memories of the old-school coaches they hated growing up. Modern personal trainers are much more educated, sensitive and goal-oriented than that.

First, anyone that is considering hiring a personal trainer should know that all professional trainers are vetted either with a certification from a well-respected academic, or sports and exercise authority, or have been in the business for a number of years and have the experience to prove their knowledge. When a personal trainer earns his or her certification, it is a reflection of hundreds of hours of study. This study ranges from human biomechanics and physiology, to counseling and goal-setting for a wide range of individuals. If a personal trainer is certified and willing to take you on as a client, they must feel confident that you can achieve your health and fitness goals, and possess the skills to make it happen.

In order to earn a personal trainer certification from a noted institution, a person must pass proficiencies in many areas. These include knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) in musculo-skeletal mechanics, nutrition, human behavior, effective goal setting, time management and exercise program customization. A competent physical trainer can adapt programs to fit the needs of people ranging from the young and sports oriented, to the elderly with serious health management issues. Good personal trainers also work closely with medical professionals to ensure safe and effective activity integration for all of their client?s potential special needs.

This is precisely why modern personal trainers reflect the qualities of religious oracles of old. People of all backgrounds can consult with them and ask for assistance achieving personal fitness goals no matter what they are trying to accomplish. People should approach a reputable personal trainer that has experience with an attitude of "needing change" and "desire to live healthier." Like an esteemed oracle, a personal trainer will design and implement a safe, fun and effective exercise regimen that will set you on a course toward fitness success. Personal trainers aren't coaches. They are motivating individuals that want to see you achieve you goals and live a healthy life.

The most important quality of a personal trainer is flexibility. Your health goals may involve more than running laps and lifting weights. Good personal trainers incorporate the benefits of all known exercise methods and training approaches to fit the individual. They can assist anybody with exercise programs including a wide variety of nutritional approaches, resistance training, cardiovascular training, flexibility, sports training, occupational movement training, stretching techniques and self-consciousness issues. If not exercise oracles, a good personal trainer is your proactive guardian angel in the gym with a plan for your healthy future!

UPDATE: Dallas real estate executive acquitted of assault in Irving ...

Vaughn Erwin Miller, 50, is the president of the retail division of Henry S. Miller Brokerage LLC and the great-grandson of Henry S. Miller Sr.

A prominent Dallas real estate professional could learn his fate today on a misdemeanor assault charge in connection with a 2009 Irving polo mallet swing that knocked a man unconscious and gave him a concussion.

Authorities say Vaughn Erwin Miller, 50, struck Jorge Cernadas, 29, in the head on purpose during a match at the Las Colinas Equestrian Center. Miller?s defense attorney says it was an accident in an inherently dangerous sport.

This case is interesting in part because Miller is the president of the retail division of Henry S. Miller Brokerage LLC and the great-grandson of Henry S. Miller Sr. But it?s also important because as defense attorney J. Michael Price II argued on Tuesday, it?s rather unusual that someone would be in criminal trouble for an act committed between the lines of a sports field.

?We?re talking about prosecuting acts on a playing field,? Price said in a Dallas County courtroom Tuesday. ?It was in the field of play within one second.?

Miller faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault in the incident. If convicted by a six-person jury, he could face up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

UPDATE at 11:25 A.M.:

Price said in his closing argument that this case is not about a criminal act.

?We?re here because of civil lawyers. We?re here because of this,? Price said as he held up a $1 bill for the jury of four men and two women. ?Because of money.?

Price argued that Miller has wealthy rivals who were upset with him because his polo team was so dominant and because Miller launched his own polo club that was essentially wiping out the Las Colinas one where the alleged assault occurred. Price said it?s those rivals who helped set Cernadas up with high-profile attorneys including former District Attorney Bill Hill, former prosecutor Toby Shook and former U.S. Attorney Michael P. Carnes.

They came after Miller for money and when they didn?t get it, Price said, they went to the police five months after the alleged assault.

Cernadas has also sued Miller in Dallas County in connection with the incident and that case is pending. Carnes is his attorney in that lawsuit.

?It was only a crime after money wasn?t paid,? Price said. ?Don?t let people abuse and manipulate the criminal justice system.?

Prosecutors countered that what Miller did is a crime and always has been. Miller was playing in a manner that was way beyond how a reasonable polo player would act or expect, they said.

?This is about someone who lost it,? said prosecutor Jody Warner.

She said Miller believed Cernadas had fouled him and he was upset the referees did not call the foul. So he swung his mallet at the victim?s head, she said.

Jurors are now deliberating in the case. If convicted, the judge would handle sentencing.

UPDATE at noon:

The jury acquitted Miller after a little more than an hour of deliberations.

(AP) ? The foiling of a planned al-Qaida terror plot in Jordan underscores a new subplot in the story of the Arab Spring: Things are heating up for King Abdullah II, a Western-oriented monarch who has run a business-friendly, pragmatic monarchy with some trappings of democracy.

Jordan, a key U.S. ally that sits at a strategic crossroads between neighboring Syria, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Saudi Arabia, has so far weathered 22 months of street protests calling for a wider public say in politics.

But this week's announcement that Jordanian authorities had thwarted an al-Qaida plan to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country has raised fears that extremists could take advantage of growing calls for change to foment violence.

The king also has been working overtime to fend off a host of domestic challenges, including a Muslim Brotherhood boycott of parliamentary elections, increasing opposition from his traditional Bedouin allies and an inability to keep the Syrian civil war from spilling over the border.

So far, Abdullah has largely maintained control, partly by relinquishing some of his powers to parliament and amending the country's 60-year-old constitution. His Western-trained security forces have been able to keep protests from getting out of hand. And most in the opposition remain loyal to the king, pressing for reforms but not his removal.

The stakes are high: Abdullah is a close friend of the United States and has been at the forefront in its global war on terrorism, including in Afghanistan. Jordan serves as a buffer zone to Saudi Arabia, another Sunni Muslim country, and to Israel, a friend under a peace treaty signed in 1994. The kingdom hosts the largest Palestinian population outside the West Bank.

"The worst nightmare would be for Israel and Saudi Arabia," said liberal lawmaker Jamil Nimri. "Jordan shares the longest border with Israel and is one of its few remaining Arab friends, while for the Saudis, it's a neighboring country with a similar monarchy system in trouble."

Concern over Jordan's stability was underlined last month, when its U.S., British and French allies quickly dispatched their military experts to help Jordanian commandos devise plans to shield the population in case of a chemical attack from neighboring Syria.

Jordan is worried that Syrian President Bashar Assad might lose control over his chemical weapons in the civil war and that his stock could subsequently fall into the hands of al-Qaida or Lebanon's Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

More than 210,000 Syrian refugees also have fled to the kingdom to escape the violence at home, straining basic services like water, electricity and the health care system.

In the past three months, dozens of Jordanian policemen were wounded in violent riots at a dust-filled refugee camp packed with 35,000 Syrians near the northern border.

A growing number of stray Syrian missiles also have fallen on Jordanian villages in the north in recent weeks, wounding several civilians as Assad widened his offensive against rebel holdouts near the Jordanian frontier.

A Jordanian border patrol officer also was shot dead Monday during army clashes with eight militants who sought to illegally cross a border fence into Syria.

Hours before the clash, Jordan announced that authorities had arrested 11 suspected al-Qaida-linked militants for allegedly planning to attack shopping malls and Western diplomatic missions in the country with explosives and rockets.

Two Arab diplomats, insisting on anonymity because they are not allowed to make press statements, said regional intelligence indicates that militants see Jordan as an "easy prey" as they try to consolidate their presence between hot spots.

"The Jordanian people can never enjoy complete stability when our country is surrounded by wars and uprisings," said Yousef Matarneh, a 45-year-old civil servant.

Abdullah has tried to forestall Arab Spring-style uprisings that have toppled autocratic regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya, and led to the war in Syria.

His reform roadmap envisions parliamentary polls as a vehicle toward having an elected prime minister for the first time in Jordan's history. Previously, it was the king's prerogative to appoint the premier.

Abdullah also has been trying to buttress his ailing economy, straining under $23 billion foreign debt, a record deficit of $2 billion and rising inflation, by inviting foreign investment and marketing Jordan as a tourist destination.

"If you want to change Jordan for the better, there is a chance, and that chance is through the upcoming elections," he told a gathering of 3,000 prominent politicians and businessmen on Tuesday. "There is a way, and that way is through the next parliament."

But the opposition, dominated by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, is boycotting the Jan. 23 vote and vowing to continue street protests.

The Islamists argue that a new election system gives too much weight to traditional tribally based conservatives loyal to the monarchy who dominate local politics. The government insists that Jordan's system is used by many countries, and that the Islamists' preferred all-party list system would inflate their numbers.

Many Jordanians are keen to avoid the turmoil that followed the revolution in Egypt, which led to the election of a Muslim Brotherhood member as president of the Arab world's most populous nation.

"We will not trade our stability for anything. People in the region envy us for it," said 25-year-old Mohammed Shneikat, who works at a music store in Amman.

The king's supporters point to voter registration that has exceeded 2.3 million, or 33 percent of the country's 6 million population.

"Nobody wants the king to abdicate," said independent lawmaker Hosni Shiyyab. "There's a consensus among supporters and opponents that he should stay because he is a stabilizing factor among the different segments of the society."

There are, however, signs of increasing opposition. Street protests in Jordan have remained largely peaceful, but recent slogans have begun pointing to the king, breaking a longstanding taboo against criticizing him.

"Abdullah, listen well, your reforms are cosmetic. The Arab Spring's next stop is Amman," chanted 7,000 Islamist opposition and youth movements during a recent protest in the Jordanian capital ? the largest gathering in months.

Even the king's traditional supporters have started to voice unheard of criticism, with young Bedouins staging small rallies to rebuke the monarch, although their families still form the bedrock of support for Abdullah's Hashemite monarchy.

"He gave us nothing. In fact, he made us poorer and without jobs," lamented Yazan, 26, a high school teacher who earns $300 a month. He declined to give his last name fearing government reprisal.

Japan?s Government Pension Investment Fund, Among Others, Forced Away From Fixed Income

With a debt-to-GDP ratio in excess of 200%, two lost decades and counting, and continuing economic suffering from the impact of last year?s earthquake and tsunami, Japan?s economic situation is not the envy of many people. Adding to this is the problem arising from underfunded pension funds, which is partly due to Japan?s demographics and a fund management approach with historically little diversification. Because of these challenges (or maybe thanks to them), large funds in Japan are being forced to rethink their portfolio management approach.

About 95% of Japanese government bonds (JGBs) are currently owned by domestic residents, as pointed out in a recent academic study analyzing the Japanese sovereign debt situation. State-owned institutions account for a substantial proportion of domestic ownership. Take the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF), for example, which holds close to 10% of outstanding JGBs. With assets under management of about US$1.3 trillion at the end of June 2012, it is by far the biggest pension fund globally. Almost 65% of its portfolio had been invested in Japanese domestic bonds at the end of June this year. Being one of the biggest investors in government bonds, it is no wonder that the Japanese government has been quite happy with it so far.

You can see the huge proportion of domestic assets GPIF is comprised of by adding the roughly 12% in domestic stocks this fund is holding to the domestic bond portion. With payouts of GPIF getting bigger than revenues, GPIF recently started to sell Japanese bonds. At the same time, GPIF sees the need for higher returns. Subsequently it has made efforts to diversify its portfolio, which is not surprising given that the annual yield of a 10-year Japanese government bond currently stands at 77 bps. As one way to diversify away from its bond-tilted portfolio, GPIF recently started its investment program into emerging markets and selected six asset managers to make its first investments in that region.

GPIF, however, is not the only mammoth fund in Japan from which a more diversified portfolio may be expected going forward. The Japan Post Group would be another example. Being 100% owned by the government, it consists of two huge institutions: Japan Post Insurance, which has about US$800 billion of JGBs among its security holdings, and Japan Post Bank, which owns about US$1.8 trillion worth of JGBs. According to Ryujiro Miki, investment risk manager at Japan Post Insurance Company, they hold roughly 30% of JGBs. Mr. Miki, who is a veteran investment professional, points out that the Japan Post Group will potentially be listed within the next few years as the Japanese government is looking to sell the stock of a number of holdings. A listing could have a great impact on the market as this raises the possibility that it diversifies its asset allocation away from domestic bonds.

A full-scale portfolio diversification may not be on the agenda in the short term, but it may happen in the mid to long term, according to some investment professionals. In a discussion with experts at Japanese asset management firms, it was noted that the traditional rather than risk averse approach taken by Japanese funds had actually served them quite well in terms of performance. Had Japanese funds invested more in foreign equity or foreign fixed income in recent years, their performance would have been considerably worse. Besides, Japanese funds have shown to be slow in reacting to changing investment environments. Given the fact that retail savers have continued to allocate much of their savings into bank deposits, which are then used for investment in JGBs by banks, demand for JGBs is not expected to dry up, at least in the short term. It was also noted that even a slight diversification away from JGBs to another asset class, such as domestic Japanese equity, may have a huge market impact given the size of assets under management at some funds. In this sense, GPIF, for example, must be very careful when considering diversification.

In Japan there are no formal pension fund governance issues involved with the allocation of Japanese government bonds to the investment portfolios of governmental institutions. According to industry experts in Japan, trustees are formally independent from the Japanese government. This is evidenced by the observation that trustees voice their opinions very freely in the respective investment committees, which would presumably not be the case were there an implicit agreement between governmental pension funds and the government to allocate JGBs regardless of investment policy needs. If there were any kind of measures associated with repression in Japan, it would be through extensive management of banks and other financial institutions, as noted in a recent BIS working paper on liquidation of government debt.

Given the challenges mentioned at the outset, there is certainly a possibility that holdings of Japanese pension funds will be more diversified going forward. Pension funds? asset allocations may then reflect the interests of beneficiaries to a much greater extent than they do now. As a result, the present era, during which the Japanese government has been able to borrow with low interest, may be coming to an end in the not-so-distant future.

NCAA won't rule on UCF appeal until January, Knights eligible for postseason

The NCAA won't rule on UCF's postseason ban appeal until at least Jan. 24, making the Knights eligible for the postseason, a source close to the football program told the Orlando Sentinel today.

The NCAA does not impose punishment during pending appeals.

As a result, the Knights are eligible to compete for a Conference USA title and appear in a bowl game. If the NCAA appeals committee upholds the postseason ban, UCF would be forced to sit out the postseason during the 2013 season, its first year in the Big East.

UCF coach George O'Leary confirmed the news during his weekly press conference around noon.

"I was told last week that the hearing will be Jan. 24, which that?s what I I thought it would be," O'Leary said. "I think it?s great news for our team, it?s great news for our fan base."

The Knights were hit with hefty sanctions after the NCAA's Committee on Infractions determined the school committed major recruiting infractions and suffered from a "loss of institutional control." UCF athletics director Keith Tribble and wide receivers coach David Kelly were forced to resign after the NCAA accused them of lying to investigators, a charge both men deny.

UCF officials accepted a long list of sanctions, including a men's basketball postseason ban and scholarship reductions in football and men's basketball.

However, UCF President John Hitt opted to appeal the football ban because school leaders felt the punishment was excessive. He noted UCF gained no competitive advantage in football from the rules infractions and the sole person involved in the football violations -- Kelly -- was immediately removed from the program.

Hitt told the Sentinel in August the school sought an expedited appeal process with the hope of getting an answer before the start of the 2012 postseason, but the NCAA just confirmed the process would not be wrapped up until January.

O'Leary said the decision did not have a large impact on the day-to-day of the football team but did deliver a message to the team when he learned of the hearing date.

"They?re just reassured that there?s nothing in our way except ourselves," O'Leary said. "I think that?s what I said to them is that, hey, right now everything that?s on the table is there and we just got to keep going after the things we need to go after."

UCF moves to the Big East, a league with an automatic qualifying Bowl Championship Series bid. It will be the final year of the BCS postseason format and likely represents the Knights' best shot at earning a coveted spot in a BCS game without having to post an undefeated record.

Hitt, UCF athletic director Todd Stansbury and O'Leary all said the decision to appeal was worth the risk.

"We think it's the right thing to do to stand up for the program," Hitt said of the appeal. "We'll take what comes on that."?

Check back for more updates soon.

Should You Try Intermittent Fasting? | Care2 Healthy Living

One of the well-known rules of weight loss asserts that when you eat is as important as what you eat. Which is why many of us have long held to certain food-timing conventions we believe will help keep our metabolisms humming from the moment we wake up: We kick-start our mornings with a solid breakfast; we eat several small meals throughout the day. We try not to go more than a few hours ? heaven forbid a whole day ? without food, because we fear it might slow our metabolic rate to a crawl.

Now, though, a small-but-growing group of nutrition and fitness experts is beginning to question that conventional wisdom. These experts argue that constant grazing can actually disrupt metabolic pathways and that the best way to kick our metabolisms into high gear is occasionally to eat less often ? in short, to observe an eating pattern known as intermittent fasting.

When most of us hear the word ?fasting,? we?re likely to think of politically motivated hunger strikes or endurance stunts like illusionist David Blaine?s infamous 44-day stint, sans food, in a transparent, Plexiglas box. But the occasional fasting these experts are recommending is something different. They point out that humans evolved through multiple short-term periods of caloric restriction, and that our metabolisms operate more efficiently when freed from the burdens of 24/7 digestion and nutrition assimilation.

The time frames recommended for intermittent fasting vary. Popular options (all of which can incorporate sleep time) include daily 14- to 16-hour fasts, once- or twice-weekly 24-hour fasts, and alternate-day fasts of assorted time durations.

Ultimately, the goals and results of these programs are similar. Studies indicate that short-term fasting can increase longevity, help regulate glucose levels, and help treat everything from asthma and autoimmune diseases to cardiac arrhythmias.

In many ways, short-term fasting has more in common with detox regimens than with extended fasts of multiple days or weeks. But detox programs follow specific dietary rules, while short-term fasts rely on only the period of not eating to achieve health benefits.

It should be noted, however, that some health experts, including detox experts, are not big fans of intermittent fasting. And even advocates acknowledge it?s not for everyone (see ?Note,? page 4).

Integrative nutritionist Kathie Swift, MS, RD, LDN, has mixed feelings. On the one hand, she notes, observing what happens to the body during a short fast can help people become more observant of their habitual pattens and learn to identify real hunger.

?I?m fascinated by the idea of?alternate-day fasting,? she says. ?Some people do that almost intuitively ? eat?heavily one day, and then really, really cut down the next day.? But she also notes that because the body relies on key nutrients to eliminate toxins, build healthy tissue and more, intermittent fasting can cause problems for people who are not generally well-nourished.

The biggest skepticism about fasting stems from the concern that it will disrupt metabolism and lead to weight gain. Yet a new study published this year in the journal Cell Metabolism suggests that limiting periods of food intake to eight hours a day might reduce the risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases.

In the study, researchers noted that mice who continually grazed on fatty food for 100 days gained weight and developed high cholesterol, high blood glucose and liver damage. The mice that fasted for 16 hours a day ? but ate the same total amount of food during their nonfasting periods ? weighed less, stayed healthy and performed better when they exercised.

Why? Researchers have found that after a few hours of fasting, the body starts to burn fat and break down cholesterol into beneficial bile acids ? as if it were flipping a fuel-selector switch. The liver, meanwhile, shuts down glucose production for several hours, lowering blood glucose levels. Instead of ending up in the bloodstream, extra glucose is used to repair damaged cells and make new DNA, which can help prevent chronic inflammation. Meanwhile, liver enzymes are activated and help in the creation of brown fat (the good kind, which converts extra calories to heat).

?You?re enhancing your body?s ability to use fat as an energy source,? says strength and conditioning specialist Mike T. Nelson, a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota in kinesiology and an intermittent faster. ?Being more metabolically flexible allows you to shift back to burning fat faster after a meal.?

Frequent eating, on the other hand, means the body keeps making and storing fat, enlarging both fat and liver cells. Take that too far, and liver damage can occur. Plus, the liver keeps right on making glucose and raising blood-sugar levels.

Jordan foils 'major terrorist plot'

Eleven men have been arrested by Jordanian intelligence services which accuses them of planning a "major terrorist plot," attacking shopping centers, residential buildings and foreigners, including diplomats.

Jordan's state-run news agency, Petra, reported today that the plan was uncovered months ago during its early stages as the accused terrorists carried out surveillance on potential targets and armed themselves with explosives, guns and mortars.

The men were described as "terrorists associated with the ideology of Al Qaeda." Photos posted on the agency's website showed four of the men with the bushy beards often associated with Salafism, an ultra-conservative brand of Islam.

The plot, it was reported, was dubbed "9/11 (2)," and would start with an attack on diplomats in hotels. Then two shopping malls would be bombed, followed by other attacks using TNT and "new types of explosives to be used for the first time." Some of the weapons allegedly came from Syria and the accused were said to have consulted with al Qaeda explosives experts over the internet. Suicide bombers and car bombs would also be used.

The Jordanian authorities said the group was "under constant surveillance at every stage" and that they had started choosing members to carry out the attacks.

"Their objective was to create a highly destructive explosive that would cause the highest number of casualties and extensive physical damage," said the statement on the Petra web site.

Jordan has not seen the protests and violence that many of its neighbors have during the so-called Arab Spring, but discontent with the ruling monarchy is growing. Earlier this month, King Abdullah II dissolved parliament and new elections have been announced for January. Around 15,000 people, most supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for reform on Oct. 5 in the biggest demonstrations the country has seen since the Arab Spring began.

Jordan has also taken more than 200,000 Syrian refugees, with that number expected to grow dramatically in the coming months as the violence in Syria continues unabated. A second refugee camp is due to open to cope with the influx.

Google Spills Earnings Early, Made Way Less Money This Quarter Than Everyone Thought [Google]

It's easy to get caught up in the Wall Street expectations game, under whose rules Google just had a disastrous third quarter. But while earnings were down significantly year over year, and were well below analyst expectations, the company still hauled in over two billion dollars of income on $14.10 billion of revenue. That's got to count for something, right? More »

Fantasy Football's Top Scorers from NFL Week 6

We've now played six weeks of the 2012 NFL season, which means that in fantasy football leagues with 13-week regular seasons, we've effectively hit the halfway point of this year's fantasy campaign.

Just like every week in the NFL, Week 6 featured some transcendent performances and more than a few stinkers, but in the truest spirit of a half-full glass, let's accentuate the positives and take a look at the top scorers in fantasy football this week.

Please note that these scores were tabulated using a PPR scoring system that awards one point for 10 rushing or receiving yards, 25 passing yards and each reception, six points for all touchdowns and subtracts two points for turnovers.

As an ?Expert? Makes Inaccurate Claims on Asbestos Exposure, the ...

Oct122012

Asbestos FibersIt?s hard to believe, but people in the United States still receive false information all the time about the safety of asbestos exposure.?Even after the asbestos companies admitted that their products cause disease, there are still those who try to dispel the dangers of the carcinogen.?Although asbestos companies aren?t nearly as successful as they were in the mid 1900s, they are still thriving; with asbestos imported into the U.S everyday. And with profits inevitably comes the power of persuasion.

A prominent news talk radio company located in Tulsa, Oklahoma released an article this week discussing the safety levels of asbestos.?The article cited an expert who claimed that the public doesn?t accurately understand the nature of asbestos, and that the only real sufferers of asbestos exposure are those that worked as pipefitters and machinists.?The expert continues to state that only people who have worked in positions that were repeatedly exposed to concentrated levels of asbestos, such as pipefitters and machinists, suffer from diseases such as mesothelioma.?According to him, the public is ignorant when it comes to asbestos exposure, and argues that people breathe in asbestos every day without knowing it.?

It should be noted that the ?expert? is a businessman with ties to the asbestos industry.?He is not a doctor or scientist, nor did the article seek the professional opinion of one such expert; and probably for good reason.?

Most medical experts and toxicologists concur that there is no safe level of exposure when it comes to asbestos.?This theory is accredited to multiple accounts of mesothelioma from bystander asbestos exposure.?This is when someone has been indirectly exposed to asbestos dust, frequently or infrequently, but did not directly handle the carcinogen.?There have been several accounts of family members of trade workers who were exposed simply from the fibers carried into the home from the workers? clothes, hair and shoes.

Asbestos advocates were quick to react to the article.?Members of the mesothelioma community, including patients, family members and friends, resounded in unified outrage over the claims made in the article.?One man wrote about how his wife and sister both died of mesothelioma due to exposure from their father?s as children.?A woman spoke of her father, a high school English teacher, who was also diagnosed with mesothelioma.?In fact, virtually every comment attributed to the story took umbrage with the dangerously inaccurate information given by the supposed expert.

The truth is, determining an exact safety level of asbestos is a moot point.?After multiple accounts of indirect and infrequent exposure resulting in a fatal diagnosis of mesothelioma or lung cancer, even the smallest percentage of exposure is unacceptable.?Articles like this one are deplorable, as they promote an industry that self-admittedly sells products that cause fatal disease and trivialize the loss that so many families have had to endure.

Baron and Budd has been representing clients who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma for over 35 years.?In our long history, we have represented a wide array of clients, including many who did not work in a trade typically associated with asbestos exposure.?If you would like to learn more about the asbestos industry, or if you or someone you know has been affected by mesothelioma, visit here. ?

Adult Music Lessons Create New Horizons In Westerville | NBC 4i

New Horizons is the only program of its kind in central Ohio. Anyone age 50 or up who wants to get back into the band or orchestra, or?start an instrument for the very first?time,?can join.

It happens all the time; you play a musical instrument in elementary school, maybe junior high. Then you shove it in your closet and forget about it. A program in Westerville is letting people pick back up right where they left off -- decades later.

It's the only program of its kind in Central Ohio. The model works like this: anyone age 50 or up who wants to get back into the band or orchestra -- or play for the first time ever --?can join.

They want you to drop the apprehension at the door and play like you know what you're doing, even if you feel like you don't.?

Wes Miller is the owner of the Columbus Music Academy and helped start the program a few years ago. It's grown from three members to 16. Former music teacher Dee Smith was one of the first to join.

?I was a piano player,? Smith said. ?I majored in piano at college and I just realized as I got ready to retire, I?ve never been in a band."

So at age 63, she picked up the clarinet for the first time ever, seeing this as the right time and place to try.

?I just always have felt safe and so even though I hadn't played a clarinet before it was just fun and easy and I knew if I had mistakes it was OK," she said.

Mary Lee Bendig, on the other hand, decided she wanted to re-visit an old friend. She picked up her bow for the first time in decades.

?When I got to high school, I decided I was too mature for the violin. I was going to be a majorette," Bendig said.

Now, her re-discovered love for music serves as an escape.

"I work full-time and still try to get everything done. Family, elderly mother, grandkids, kids. So it's a time that I can just stop the merry-go-round, get off and have some fun," she said.

Both ladies also credit the program with health benefits. Bendig is seeing her bone spurs improve and Smith is hoping to counteract the effects of Alzheimer?s -- a disease her mother is battling.

Whatever the reason for joining, Miller is just hoping more people give it a chance.

"The model of New Horizons is your best is good enough,? said Miller. ?There?s a lot of apprehension in how they think they'll sound and that is not a worry."

The New Horizons rehearse Thursday afternoons at one. It's $85 for an eight-week session. ??

Romney drops SEAL story after mother complains

ABC News' Michael Falcone and Emily Friedman report:

Mitt Romney's campaign said today he will stop citing his meeting with a former Navy Seal killed in last month's terror attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya after the victim's mother protested his use of her son's death.

"He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama," said Barbara Doherty, the mother of the slain Navy Seal Glen Doherty.

She added, "I don't trust Romney."

A Romney aide told ABC News today that the Republican candidate will respect Mrs. Doherty's wish and stop telling the story on campaign stops about how he met Doherty a few years ago.

[Tune in to ABCNews.com on Thursday for livestreaming coverage of the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate moderated by ABC's Martha Raddatz in Danville, Ky. Coverage kicks off with ABC News' live preview show at noon, and full debate coverage begins at 8 p.m.]

On Tuesday in Van Meter, Iowa, Romney told the story of meeting Glen Doherty, a Massachusetts native, a few years ago.

"He told me that he keeps going back to the Middle East. He cares very deeply about the people there," Romney said, recalling his conversation with the former SEAL. " He served in the military there, went back from time to time to offer security services and so forth to people there. You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALS killed in Benghazi on Sept. 11."

Romney briefly choked up while telling the story, saying, "It touched me."

[Read more about Romney's anecdote]

Boston television station WHDH posted the interview with Doherty's mother today. But Romney re-told the story at a campaign stop just hours later in Ohio Tuesday night and again today in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

Last month, after the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, which took the lives of Doherty, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, and two other Americans, Romney and his wife, Ann, issued a statement offering condolences to his family.

"Glen served America with bravery and distinction, and gave his life in an effort to save others. Befitting his service as a Navy SEAL, his legacy is one of heroism and courage. We grieve for his loss - and for all who lost their lives - and pray for the comfort of those who will miss him," Romney wrote at the time. He did not mention having met Doherty at the Christmas party.

In a separate interview with a Seattle radio station a friend of Doherty's, Elf Ellefsen, recalled hearing Doherty talk about his encounter with Romney in less-than-glowing terms.

"He said it was very comical," Ellefsen said in an interview with radio station KIRO. "Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale."

"Honestly it does make me sick," Ellefsen said in the interview with KIRO's Libby Denkmann. "Glen would definitely not approve of it. He probably wouldn't do much about it. He probably wouldn't say a whole lot about it. I think Glen would feel, more than anything, almost embarrassed for Romney. I think he would feel pity for him."

ABC's Emily Friedman contributed reporting.
